Systems such as Bayesian filters are used to learn word frequencies and patterns that usually are associated with both spam and non-spam messages.

Pros: Bayesian filter has become increasingly popular as they are very effective in identifying spam. With a pre-trained spam core, Bayesian filters can achieve very good detection rate without much maintenance.

Cons: It's difficult to set the bar. If too loose, then a lot of spam can still get into your email box. If too aggressive, a blocker will tend to block email with spam characteristics. Moreover, as Bayesian filter gets more and more popular, spammers tend to use various ways to cheat the filter. A good spam filter should be able to take effective noise-reduction technique unmask these tricks.
