Working with Anti-Virus Programs

SpamWeed is not an anti-virus product, however, it provides very good protection against email viruses. It can:

  • Block all viral email. SpamWeed has build-in a "score-based" security system. By default it will block all viral email and email with executable contents. This security check is positioned before the whitelist checking. So even virus email from your friends can't by pass the check. (Hint: you can use SpamWeed's Keyword List feature to protect legitimate mail which contains executables. Please refer to the help file)
  • Block html objects and exploits of the MIME standard. No automatic triggering of executable code is possible within SpamWeed mail viwer.

How does it work?

How Does SpamWeed work?

There are mainly two parts concerning the program, one is SW Engine, which works at the background and the other is SW Administrator (SW window), which is the interface for users to control the Engine, to check junk mail box and to train SpamWeed.

Using advanced statistical filtering technologies, SpamWeed analyzes all of your incoming email messages and assigns each message a numeric probability of being a spam. Then it delivers only good mails to your inbox while junk mail is quarantined in SpamWeed junk mail box. If SpamWeed blocks a legitimate mail by mistake, you can easily get it back in SpamWeed window.

<< back

How do I start using SpamWeed?

To check email, just open your email client as you usually do. The SpamWeed program will start working and, in SpamWeed Admin (represented as a small green icon at the right bottom corner of your screen), show you separately legitimate mails and junk mails that SpamWeed has classified for you. SpamWeed acheives very impressive results out of box. However, in case you find a spam in the "legitimate mails" folder or vice versa, select the mail (hold down CTRL to select more than one mail) click "move to junk mail" or "move to legitimate mail" button on the tool bar to put the mail in right category. SpamWeed will learn from such experience and improve future performance.

To take the SpamWeed tour, click here.

<< back

How does the whitelist work?

The whitelist is a useful tool which is to make sure that in no case your friends' mails will ever get marked as a spam. When installing SpamWeed, it will automatically import your address book as the initial whitelist.

SpamWeed automatically maintain a whitelist (called the system whitelist). While you use SpamWeed, it will learn your communication habits, the people you communicate regularly, and add their email addresses to the system whitelist automatically.

You can also manually add your new friends or contacts to whitelist during use.

<< back

Does SpamWeed use blacklist to filter spam mails?

The blacklist feature in SpamWeed is used as a convenient method to block a known sender, or receiving address. This is very handy if you no longer want to receive mail from a mailing list and you lost the registration email which explains the way to unsubscribe. We do NOT recommend user to add addresses of spammers to the blacklist. It is proven to be useless and is totally unnecessary for SpamWeed.

<< back

How does SpamWeed delete messages?

SpamWeed doesn't delete your spam mails immediately. Instead, it places spam in a quarantine area (controlled by the SpamWeed admin program). After 7 days (the time period is user-configurable), all spam mails in the quarantine area and all backup copy of user's normal emails will be moved to the trashcan and you can not recover the mails again once they are moved to trashcan.

<< back

I block a legitimate message by mistake, can I get the message back?

Go to "junk mail" folder in SpamWeed Admin Window and move it back to "legitimate mail" folder. Then you need to go to you email client to retrieve this mail to your inbox.

<< back

Where can I check quarantined mails?

In SpamWeed Admin Window, quarantined mails are placed in "Junk Mail" folder and by default, stay for 7 days before being removed to trashcan.

<< back

I can't find some legitimate mails in my inbox while I see them in "legitimate mail" folder in SpamWeed Admin Window, what's wrong?

Working as a POP3 proxy, SpamWeed scans all email that are in your mail server before start receiving them. So if you have a large amount of mails sitting in your mail server, your email client may stop responding due to timeout issue which means an email client gives up retrieving mails if it doesn't receive emails from the mail server within certain time. If this occurs, simply leave SpamWeed there and after it fetches all mails, it will popup a balloon at the right bottom corner of your screen indicating that "you have new mail". This means SpamWeed has finished receiving emails and you can go back to your email client to receive emails left in cache by clicking "receive/send" button.

<< back

Click "Options" under "View" menu, in "Engine" sub-category, tick the small box in front of "Only accept messages from white-listed senders".

To enable this function, tick the small box in front of it and enter a figure.

To disable this function, simply deselect it.

<< back

How to use "display options" button?

This function is again, to narrow down the mail you need to browse. For example, you may not need to check email approved by your whitelist. By using this function, you can only view mails of certain type.

Your support team is the best and most responsive team I have ever dealt with. That statement comes from a retired IBM'er who gave 37 years of hardware service and I rate your service superior to IBM''s and anyone else I've dealt with. Your team should be proud!!!

I have tested out several similar software - sometimes spending hours entering all kinds of filtering criteria. Your product is by far superior, and what was the most remarkable was the almost total lack of setup on my part! Thanks also to your tech department for being patient and responsive.
