REMOVE SPAM AT THE SERVER LEVEL WITH SPAMWEED 1.2.1, A GREAT PLUG-IN TO YOUR MAIL CLIENT
Perhaps the most effective method of dealing with spam is to remove it at the server level, before it even gets to your inbox. On your CD this month you'll find the rather excellent SpamWeed 1.2.1 which acts as a proxy server, heading spam off at the pass.
What's nice about SpamWeed is that it integrates as a plug-in for just about every POP3 email client on the market, whether you use Outlook Express, Eudora or PocoMail you will find it useful. To determine which mails are genuine and which are spam, SpamWeed uses statistical technology and an auto-generated white list to manage your mail. As well as a white list (of address which aren't spam) the program also allows you to create a black list of addresses which definitely are junk.
For each POP3 account you want SpamWeed to filter, you need to change the server settings inside your mail client. The set-up program contains an animated tutorial showing you how to do this, but essentially you just change the POP mail server to 127.0.0.1 and your log-in name to original_name@original_pop3_server: original_pop3_port.
If SpamWeed can, it will try to do all the hard work for you and autoconfigure your mail accounts itself. This works a treat if you are using Outlook Express for example. Once it's all configured, all you need to do is to click the new SpamWeed icon in your System Tray to access the Classifier screen. Inside this screen you can see which mails SpamWeed identifies as junk and which are legitimate. If you see an erroneous classification, simply select the mail and click the Move Up or Move Down Buttons to change its status - SpamWeed will learn from your modifications.
